a selection of the people, places and things that seem to hold my continued interest. i hope you’ll find them equally useful and informative.

Locals

Gorge.net
Not only the best-known internet service provider in the columbia river gorge, but they also host one of the best sites compiling local information.
www.gorge.net

Columbia Gorge Earth Center
this non-profit attempts to bring ecological and economical stability to the area through public education and supporting programs such as the rebuildit center and local currency. they also sponsor an eco-home tour and often put on earth day celebrations in hood river.
www.cgec.info

Gorge Local Currency Cooperative
the GLCC is launching a local currency program to help support trade labor and local business. i’m on the steering committee, and it’s been really exciting to develop our own money system. yes, it’s legal. learn more about RiverHOURS here.
www.riverhours.org

Radio Tierra, KZAS 95.1 FM
the gorge just got its own community radio station! finally, something other than the awful stuff we’re used to. lots of hispanic music, but they really make an effort to play a wide mix of musical styles, and it’s loads better than the repetitive crap on commercial stations.
www.radiotierra.org

Skylight Theatre
like going to a first-run movie in your living room. the whole front row is sofas and beanbags, there’s no kids after 7 pm, and they sell beer. also tends to play more artsy or intellectual features.

Ecology

AtKisson
alan atkisson’s book, believing cassandra, was a large influence on my bachelor’s thesis. later, his development company expressed interest in working pro bono with world steward on their intergenerational commerce project.
www.atkisson.com

Long Now Foundation
i happened across the book, clock of the long now, while working at the marylhurst library and it was the first truly mind-expanding thing i think i had read since quantum healing in 01991. you will finally understand the reasoning behind my habit of the leading zero wherever a year is notated. discover plans for a 10,000-year clock that encourages humans to think in longer spans of time, rather than the seconds-long soundbites the general public is bombarded with daily; and a modern rosetta stone, with Genesis translated into every known language.
www.longnow.org

World Steward
it was hard to decide whether to put world steward with this group or in the locals section, but finally decided that the work being done there fits better here. locally, they’re a struggling non-profit trying to develop a fully sustainable agricultural, art and science retreat in a beautifully unique habitat. however, there’s some heavy hitters interested in their larger intergenerational commerce project; not only the above mentioned atkisson, but they also collaborate with the eden project in the UK, and amory lovins (natural capitalism) is one of world steward's staunchest supporters.
www.worldsteward.org

Ecotrust
this portland, OR-based group is leading the region in sustainable building practices and public education about salmon ecology.
www.ecotrust.org

The Natural Step
i first heard of the natural step when reading atkisson’s book. how brilliant! no wonder he’s relocated to sweden ~ they’re certainly leaders in developing economic and environmental sustainability. here’s links to both the parent organization and the local oregon chapter.

News & Politics

The Drudge Report
matt drudge may be known as a conservative commentator or a muckraking internet journalist, but his news page ~ culled from a wide variety of media sources ~ compiles the best stories that you may only find buried anywhere else. global, national, political, even the requisite tabloid fodder gets represented here. also includes links to a pretty comprehensive list of commentators and news sites from around the world. an almost daily read.
www.drudgereport.com

Michael Moore
hailing from the same region of the country as moore, i’ve been fond of his work ever since roger & me was first released. at the time it said a lot about everything i was learning was wrong with our economic system as currently practiced. he never ceases to entertain or enlighten me, though often simply documenting several things i always suspected. another place to find important news clips that might be buried in other outlets.
www.michaelmoore.com

Arianna Huffington
i first picked up on arianna huffington watching politically incorrect in its old days on comedy central. she always seemed to be really well-educated and informed, but on the wrong side of the issue. a few years later i saw her again, but she had clearly seen the light. i’ve hung on nearly every word since. i wish she had made a bigger impression on the voters in california last year.
www.ariannaonline.com

MoveOn
this is one of the things i love best about the internet. it connects likeminded thinkers with lightning speed. the growth of moveon has been phenomenal to watch. whether or not you agree with their message, they’re a prime example of using online technology to mobilize both grassroots and nationwide simultaneously.
www.moveon.org

The Daily Show
they may claim to be “fake news,” but the daily show is by far the most important thing on television today. it may be satire, it may be hilarious, but jon stewart asks the questions i wish the mainstream media would, instead of martha and michael and who got kicked off of american idol this week. the heavy-hitting guest lineup he’s had recently and the fact that the big politicos get more air time than the hollywood hustlers says a lot about the real integrity of the show.

Ethereal

Free Will Astrology
i’ve been reading rob breszny for well over a decade, and he always seems to know exactly what’s going on inside my head. it’s consistently a reassuring kick in the pants that draws reference to the irreverent and sublime alike.
www.freewillastrology.com

Planet Waves
don’t remember exactly when first happening across eric francis’ site online, but do know that like breszny, he seems to have a real connection to the universe i reside in, and therefore his interpretations of planetary alignments are more helpful than most. the tone is much more serious than free will, but always well-written and informative, with a rather wide array of seemingly well-researched essays and commentary on a host of subjects by a collection of contributors.
www.planetwaves.net

Jonathan Cainer
this british astrologer is a little more glib in his writing, but still seems to really understand what’s going on out there and tries to give useful counsel. eric francis often fills in when he’s on vacation, giving cainer more credibility with me too. contains free daily, weekly and monthly sections, which is also a nice bonus.
stars.metawire.com

Lotus Tarot
an interesting site with a number of free tarot readings available online. has the added feature of being able to save readings for comparison as time passes, with extra readings and storage available to those who pay a small one-time membership fee.

Music & Entertainment

My Morning Jacket
the first time i heard my morning jacket, i was blown away. i don’t think i listened to anything other than the tennessee fire for at least eight or nine months. they seem to play portland often, and every time i see them they’re better than the time before. i haven’t been this excited about a new band since first hearing pearl jam in 01991.
www.mymorningjacket.com

Honey Tongue
just straight up rock-n-roll, but jen can belt out a song like nobody’s business, they write pretty solid tunes and have a great seattle producer. honey tongue tours relentlessly, seeming to win new converts everywhere they go, and they’re really good people to boot. jen and graham are old friends from the northshore days – hearts of gold.
www.honeytongue.com

Clumsy Lovers
if you can’t dance to the clumsy lovers, you must be dead. road warriors from coquitlan, BC, they broke out of the pacific northwest a few years ago and hardly looked back. fortunately, wherever you live in north america, they’re probably coming your way sometime soon. with a rocking bluegrass celtic stomp, be sure to catch them ~ they infect a crowd like few bands i’ve ever seen.
www.clumsylovers.com

Buds of May
for all the NW deadhead/bluegrass types, BOM consistently provide quality music in often free venues. family-friendly, something for everyone – you never know what they’ll throw in from their amazing repertoire that ranges from jazz to billy idol. another band of good folk encountered while doing the northshore gig.
